The Whiteside County Board has placed a tax referendum on the April 2025 ballot asking for approval to levy and collect a public safety tax COUNTY WIDE, namely a 0.5% sales tax on non-exempt sales.

Current Illinois law allows the tax for public safety, public facilities, mental health, substance abuse, or transportation to be imposed on the sale of tangible personal property other than items that must be titled or regulated by an Illinois government agency (vehicles, watercraft, aircraft, trailers, and mobile homes).

In addition, this tax does not apply to sale of qualifying foods, drugs, and medical appliances.
